Ezra Stiles College was built in1961 and designed by Eero Saarinen, the Finnish-American architect and industrial designer noted for his neofuturistic style. Saarinen trained at the Yale School of Architecture, graduating in 1934. Architecturally, Ezra Stiles College is known for its lack of right angles between walls in the living areas.
The land on which Stiles and Morse Colleges were built, known as Old York Square, was previously occupied by Hillhouse High School and was purchased from the City of New Haven.
Notable alumni include the actor Edward Norton, journalist Bob Woodward, and actress Sara Gilbert. The College mascot is the A. Bartlett Giamatti Memorial Moose; a stuffed moose head graces the college dining hall. Mr. Giamatti was a Master of the College prior to being President of Yale, and his son, the actor Paul Giamatti, grew up at the College.
