A number of our classmates have been dealing with hearing loss … some the gradual kind more commonly encountered, some quite sudden and complete.  David Howorth has shared parts of his story before, but was recently profiled in The New Yorker:

Editor’s Note: Yale retired our old system. Which of the new offerings should we use? The old system was broken and fell into disuse. It’s time to resurrect it. This article briefly discusses what a Class listserv is, what it’s good for and how it would benefit you. We share a few of the design choices we face and solicit your input.

One of the lesser-known tools for communicating with other members of our class is the class listserv. It hasn’t been used very often over the past couple of years.

What is a listserv, you ask? Well, it’s just a piece of software that manages a mailing list of its members. Any member of the list can send an email to a single address, and that message will be forwarded to all the other members.

What do 69ers want from a listserv? Here are the design choices we are juggling. Your input would be helpful.

Tom Guterbock was wondering why the new license plates that he ordered for his car had not been sent to him.  So, he inquired. Today he got the reply:

Jeff Horton is dealing with a twist of fate in his life and wants to hear from other classmates who are raising their grandchildren.  He writes: “After my 33 year old son died in 2022, his two children came to live with me in Palmdale CA, north of Los Angeles.  As you all can imagine, it is exhausting, but it is also invigorating. 

I’d love to hear from any other grandparents acting as parents from our class at [email and phone in the full story].

Update: With the impending Class Colloquium talk by Art Klebanoff, we are 1) issuing a “second call” for those people interested in writing their personal stories (see below), and 2) huddling as a group on a Zoom call on the day before Art’s talk — July 10th. Several people (listed below) have indicated an interest.

We once tried to do an impromptu concert in Grand Central Station, but we were shooed out of there by railroad police. But check out what happens now.”

Viva Sicilia, a series of 30 new paintings from Sicily by Cleveland Morris, will be on display in Cleveland’s studio gallery in Staunton, VA, starting on December 2.

This is the first in a series I’m calling “Second Acts” — reports on a classmates’ journeys from a highly accomplished first act to try something a bit, um, different and challenging.

The Harvard-Yale game will return to Harvard Stadium this year.   My wife Kathy and I invite all classmates, spouses, and/or widows who are in Cambridge on November 19th to THE BRUNCH before The Game.
