Henry Stephen Iglauer – 50th Reunion Essay

Henry Stephen Iglauer

Date of Death: 11-Feb-1970

College: Timothy Dwight

From Morris Swartz: I roomed with Hank for the first three years, after which we had singles across from each other. Grew up and lived in St. Louis. Brilliant. Great sense of humor. Never seemed to complain about studying. Limited extracurricular activities, but enjoyed working at the Yale Daily News. A bit of a loner. Was very talented drawing cartoons.

Following graduation, he enrolled in the Army Reserve (to avoid the draft) with plans to subsequently go to Harvard Law School. While in basic training he became ill with meningococcal meningitis and died within 24 hours. He did not report to sick call early because of the stigma. After his death an investigation was carried out looking into the handling of this infectious disease at the military base. I am not aware of any outcome. What a sad ending! His parents were very appreciative of the educational opportunity that Yale provided to Hank, and I believe that they continued to donate to Yale for some time thereafter.

From Daniel Seiver: Hank was one of only five “intensive” econ majors from 1967-69. He was a gentle soul.
