Married to Angela Atwell, a linguist, educator, vocalist and amazing lady, we have lived in Boston for 42 years. We have one daughter and two grandchildren who live in Durham, NC. Boston has been very good to us. We are located near the Public Garden and enjoy being in the center of this fine city. We are committed to progressive ideals and do our best to promote peace and understanding.

We are involved in historic preservation and civic engagement. We enjoy world travel, fine art and classical music. We are grateful for a life of creativity and good health.

I have been a professional photographer since 1971, and continue doing photo projects and assignments. Yale made all this possible, by introducing me to important teachers and mentors, and by opening doors. The turning point for me was 1968, when I decided I would much rather be a photo-journalist than a lab research biologist. My conscientious objector status afforded me the opportunity to photograph in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Since then, I have been lucky with many opportunities, including the chance to photograph the Yale campus for a coffee-table book Yale: A Portrait. During 1989-1990, I went to every corner of the campus and saw more of Yale than I had ever seen as a student. This gave me a much greater appreciation of the University. The aerial image here was used on the cover of the book.

I photograph many different environments from Washington State’s Palouse to the beaches of Chatham, Massachusetts to the cultural textures of Spain. Collections include the Boston Athenaeum, the Library of Congress, and private galleries. My passion for photographing cities from helicopters continues unabated. Our company Back Bay Press publishes my photography books, such as Extraordinary Boston and Boston Freedom Trail. Since the first book Run of the Mill (1978), history has been a keen interest.
