Sterilize The Johns – This Time For Sure!

This is a combination post — reprising those silly buttons we bought and wore, and gearing up for a successful Yale-Harvard Game this year.

In 1968, we wanted to “sterilize the Johns” but ended with a 29-29 tie.  This year, however, we have a very good chance to win, and the whole 2018 Yale-Harvard Weekend (November 16-17) looks to be a great place to witness that and get together with friends.

Back to the buttons: Does anyone remember the details of what “worthy cause” benefitted from the button sales?  (Answer in “Comments” below.)

Tip o’ the hat to Terry Landers, for finding the “Johns” button and this “Blue Power” one when looking through an old box in his attic.  This is a reminder that we’d love to digitize and publish any memorabilia you may have.  (See “Calling All Packrats“.)

Nobody I know recalls the exact circumstances around this Blue Power button.  Was it generic, meant for the season as a whole?  Or was it for a specific game?  (Answer in Comments if you know, please.)

If anyone has some other buttons from this series, please shoot a picture of it/them and either email it to support@Yale1969.org or text it to 650-428-1395.

6/22 Addendum

I just got this picture texted to me from Ned Culver.  Thanks, Ned!   This button is probably a collector’s item in that it was printed up in anticipation of a win over Harvard, not a 29-29 tie.  Hopefully, Ned, you can attend the Yale-Harvard game this year and wear the pin for good luck!  (See information about game tickets here.)

If any reader has a button, click a picture of it and text it to me at 650-428-1395 or email support@Yale1969.org.  And anyone with information about these buttons — who sold them?  what cause?  how many were there?  what’s the story?  — please either thunk it into comments or email me for a follow up story.
